Annamaria was born in the Yorkshire seaside town of Withernsea and quickly discovered a natural talent for artistic endeavour covering many topics.

After studying painting at Bath academy of Fine Arts she graduated with a BA (Hons) in painting. Fascinated by the various forms, textures and complexities of nature, she went on to study the specialist field of medical illustration at Guy’s Hospital in London.

Illustrating the unseen

In Annamaria’s work, a familiar challenge is illustrating things not normally seen by the human eye, such as neurons, or blood cells. Another challenge is how to illustrate physiological processes, such as how the brain reacts to certain stimuli such as music.

Annamaria produces work in a variety of styles and mediums ranging from simple line drawings to full colour, highly complex illustrations.

In a career spanning more than 30 years, Annamaria has produced work on subjects covering anatomy, physiology, surgery, nursing and health. Her illustrations have been published by major medical publications including, The British Medical Journal, Oxford University Press, Health Press, W.B. Saunders and Martin Dunitz. Annamaria’s anatomical and medical artwork has been exhibited in London, her most recent exhibition was held at the Treasure House in Beverley and entitled, “Mysteries inside us”

Alongside her career as a medical illustrator, Annamaria has had a lifelong passion for music. Recently she fulfilled her ambition of learning to play the piano.

Beethoven, and in particular his thoughts on his hearing loss, is a subject she has enjoyed exploring. The ‘Walking Figure illustration of Beethoven is a copy – the original was bought by a collector who is a TV personality and author.

Annamaria also developed a love of Science Fiction, appreciating how it can inspire imaginative ideas for artists, both visually and intellectually. She is particularly interested in the film and television work of American film producer Irwin Allen, and has had illustrations published in Science fiction magazines. Annamaria’s science fiction artwork has been exhibited in the UK and USA where she had the opportunity of meeting actors, directors, writers, and musicians involved in these shows.

This quote from Einstein has been her inspiration

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.”
